California Language Assistance Information
This overview explains the California Language Assistance Program, which was developed in accordance with California Senate Bill 853.
Overview
This program will be available to California Health Plan and PPO (insurance) enrollees as of January 1, 2009. Reading health benefit documents in English can be difficult for individuals with limited English language skills. The California Language Assistance Program was designed to help alleviate the language barriers that members might encounter to accessing health care and understanding their health benefits. The program is a result of California Senate Bill 853, legislation that requires health insurance plans to provide plan members who have limited English skills with access to certain written and spoken language assistance, free of charge.
IMPORTANT: You can get an interpreter at no cost to talk to your doctor or health plan. To get an interpreter or to ask about written information in (your language), first call your health plan’s phone number at 1-800-428-6337. Someone who speaks (your language) can help you. If you need more help, call the Health Plan Help Center at 1-888-466-2219.
